The Wardrobe is part of the Waimate Theatre Company. It is based in a new building in Shearman Street on the opposite side of the road to the Knox Church and next to the Senior Citizen Rooms.
The Wardrobe started out making costumes and props for the Theatre Company’s productions, but in recent years it has also been hiring out costumes and clothing to the public. The buildings are packed with many many items it has gathered or made over the years.
In the way of costumes you may want to dress up as a witch, pumpkin, doctor, Can-can dancer, nun, fox, schoolgirl, clown, soldier, Queen, elf, chicken or Snow White. There are racks and boxes full of wonderful costumes for you to try on and select from for your stage production, party or dress-up day.
There is also clothing for every occasion and from every era, from 1920s flapper dresses through to 1970s Kaftans and 1980s Abba style. There are ballgowns and evening dresses, fur coats and men’s suits. To complete your outfit there is a large selection of hats, handbags, shoes, wigs, feather boas, costume jewellery and so much more.
The Wardrobe is run by volunteers and is open Wednesdays 6.30-7.30pm and Thursdays 2- 3pm There is a basic hire fee of only $20 per person, but small items may be less. There may be a deposit required for some special items. This will be discussed at the time of hiring. All funds are ploughed back into the Waimate Theatre Company to finance costumes and props for future shows.
